Mr C Rogers spends a short vacation at Bingham Springs this week with his sons Emory and Kenneth and Stafford Hansell. Marion Tansell drove them to the Springs Tuesday and secured a comfortable cabin. The boys enjoy fishing and swimming while Rogers naps in the mornings.

A group from Athena traveled to Walla Walla on Tuesday spending the day at Mrs. Otis Whiteman home. The luncheon was at one and four bridge tables played with Mrs. M. L. Watts winning high score and Mrs. W. P. Littlejohn consolation. They also swam at the natatorium before returning to Athena in the evening.
A pleasant Friday session at Mrs. W. P. Littlejohn's home featured three tables of bridge. Decorations included gladioli and calendulae, with refreshments of confections and punch. Special guests were Mrs. Alma Koontz of Portland Mrs. Armand DeMerritt of Walla Walla Mrs. M. M. Johns and Miss Areta Littlejohn. DeMerritt won the guest trophy.
Miss Ruth Proebster pursues a twelve week summer course at Monmouth summer school specializing in music and will receive her life diploma. She plans to visit friends here and her mother Mrs. Jennie Proebster in Weston around the first of September and then move to Prosser to lead the music department for the coming year.
Mr and Mrs C M Eager and daughters Betty and Virginia return ed from Seaside Sunday morning after nearly three weeks away Mrs Van Slyke who had been staying with them while her husband was relief agent for Mr Wager left for Moro to visit her father Mr Van Slyke stayed at the depot until Mr Bager took over his post.
Trust ed negro William Douglas escapes from Walla Walla penitentiary near noon Monday while under guard. He had dog training privileges outside the grounds and vanished during a practice search. guards reported the dogs recovered, but Douglas eluded pursuit.
Fire broke out yesterday forenoon in an upstairs closet of Arthur Coppock’s farm home south of Athena. Two passersby noticed flames and with buckets of water prevented major damage though lower rooms suffered water damage.
A new wheat variety will be tested next season in a Walla Walla grain nursery. The cross combines Hybrid No 128 and Odessa to create a promising line for further evaluation.
A Washington special reports Senator Stanfield would consider entering the fall election if a grand jury investigation reveals irregularities in the primary. He noted reports from the West about a possible third ticket and said decisions would be guided by events in Oregon before he leaves for home Thursday.
Threshing in Polk County shows light yields for wheat oats and vetch. Wheat is running around 15 to 20 bushels per acre though 25 was expected. Hot May spell blamed for small heads and long straw appears favorable despite the lighter grain.
The market bottom has fallen out of the onion business as Walla Walla growers report prices at 75 cents per 100 sack, signaling a sharp drop in local onion earnings.
