May Day Festival Opens With Parade and School Program

Athens holds its May Day Festival starting with a 10 40 parade from the school led by Eugene Osborne on horseback. City officials ride in autos, followed by school groups, with the day featuring a market dinner at noon, speeches by local figures, a student program, and the crowning of the May Queen. The event concludes with a baseball game between Pendleton High and Athena High and a 4 80 p m ball game.

Celebration of their Golden Wedding at Athens home

The McCorkell wedding celebration was held at the Athens residence of their daughter Mrs. Joseph Sheard one mile north of Athens. Guests included Mra James McCorkell Idaho and others from Garfold Washington Weston and Athens. The couple married April 14 1847 at Lake Beauport Quebec and now reside south of Weston. Covers for forty with color daffodils and a bride’s table of roses. They have eleven children and two living grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Oregon Urges Food Crop Drive Across State

Oregon implements Wilsons call for more food and thrift through a state wide campaign. The Oregon Patriotic Services League in Portland will distribute 6000 copies of the President’s messages to every grange head and mobilize towns and rural areas to convert yards into gardens. H H Ward notes action is urgent with lands to be farmed this year and youths urged to help during vacations in backyards and gardens.

Athena Red Cross Auxiliary Growing at Athena

Mw H He Hill chairman of the Athena Red Cross auxiliary will soon appoint committees and dates for work. An auxiliary was organized in Weston with 31 members led by Mrs F D Watts and Doria Barnes secretary. An auxiliary also instituted in Freewater. The chapter plans to raise money through a pastry pageant on Saturday afternoon April 8 and a benefit program at the Peoples Theater plus tea and other events. A fragmentary item list recalls T. P. Page leasing 1800 acres on the reservation and an attempted arson at Walla Walla Garrison where Private Coogan of Troop A was wounded in the hand while thwarting two men. Pendleton forms war resources drive for Umatilla County

A Pendleton meeting launched a county wide effort to place all Umatilla resources at the government’s disposal if needed. A three tier military reserve was proposed, with men ages 18 to 80 organized into first, second, and third emergency companies. Local committees in each community will coordinate with a county wide board.
