From St Petersburg April 14 Admiral Oukomtaky wires Port Arthur reports the Bezstrashni torpedo boat destroyer was separated from the fleet and sunk by Japanese destroyers. Five men were saved. The battleship Pobeida struck a mine but returned to port with no casualties.

Sinking of the Petropavlovsk Clears Why It Went Down
The Associated Press reveals an official version of the Petropavlovsk disaster at Port Arthur. As Japanese forces closed, the Russian squadron entered the harbor. A boiler explosion followed by a magazine detonation tore the hull, water flooded in, the ship rolled and sank, with a mine suspected as the cause and no survivors known on board.

Portland April 18 At 245 this afternoon the Republican district convention reassembled at the Empire theatre to nominate a candidate for congress and select two delegates to the national convention. Williamson nominated to succeed himself with Judge Carey and N E Richards as delegates, Hermann renamed by acclamation in the first district. Will Not Pay Tax Suit In Equity Before Judge Ellis
Pendleton April 14 The O R N company plans an equity suit in Circuit Court against Umatilla County and Assessor Strain to lower railroad property assessments. J W Morrow tax agent and assistants gathered records in Pendleton over two days to support claims of nonuniform, inflated values and bias, aiming to prevent delinquencies and sheriff sale. The company may appeal to the Oregon Supreme Court if lower court rulings go against them.
