The measure would tax earnings over 4000 at 1 percent with higher rates for larger incomes. It envisions 1 percent on corporations and includes residents abroad. Committee estimates about 100 million in revenue to offset tariff reductions and broader free-list implications.
John Laroque, a well known character of the reservation, died at Pendleton last Friday from heart trouble. Funeral services were held Saturday in the city with Rev. Helmick of the Methodist Church officiating at the grave. He was born in Montana in 1844 and was 68 years old. Guardian Hower I Watte has managed his affairs. It is said Laroque wished his property to go to Mr Watts upon his death, and a will to that effect is understood. He was survived only by distant relatives after his wife and only child died years ago.
Eighteen men drowned when the German bark Mimi capsized as it was towed from deep water after going ashore six weeks earlier. Twenty two aboard. four survivors. Captains Fisher and Westphal, two sailors, and two dead bodies recovered. sixteen were washed away. Fisher, Westphal and two sailors taken to hospital. one sailor in critical condition.
Union announces a big frontier show in Walla Walla called The Wild West. Directors approve the show at a fall planning meeting and expect it will echo past events with high anticipation.

W W Jacobs a Confederate veteran from this city will attend the July fourteenth Gettysburg battle anniversary on the field of singular contests. He registered with the G A R Department for Oregon in Portland. Oregon appropriates five thousand dollars to transport Civil War veterans to the celebration and will provide tents rations and camp gear for four days. Also notes timber sales by the forest service and dates for the 1916 Pendleton Roundup with schedule tentatively set for September 11 12 13. John Bell traveled to the cave for business yesterday.
In a circuit court complaint Jas A Fee John F Watson and Thos H Bronte sue the City of Athena over injuries to Mrs Mary Troland from a main street sidewalk defect alleged as a dangerous vertical jog in the north sidewalk near the Market. They claim medical and related damages totaling six thousand dollars and seek judgment with costs.
