Free Bridge Ahead as Railroads Eye Municipal Purchase

Representatives from four railroads met in Atchison to study a toll free bridge plan linking Atchison and East Atchison. The proposal, enabled by Kansas and Missouri legislation, would allow the city to acquire the bridge using railroad funds and operate it toll free while railroads pay for maintenance and operations. City officials noted no bond issue would be pursued, and detailed costs remain undetermined as legal and financial terms are drafted for submission to the four railroad presidents.
