Doniphan County School Closes Amid Community Celebration

Friday April 15 marked the closing of Sunny Side school with a community supper and a large success. Roy Wilson Sid Taylor and Ambrose Thomas led music by the Wilson orchestra. Pupils receiving perfect attendance gifts included Selmer Cue Gertrude Webb Maurie Mount Ernest Snopak Mary Scholtz and Matilda Scholtz. Spelling awardees were Mary Scholtz Katheryn Chapman Vivian Knight Erma Scott Erma Chapman Gertrude Webb Leo Hudson Harry Hendershot Selmer Cue Marie Mount Lizard Mount Samuel Ross Everett Hendershot and Miss Minnie Trautloff. The term was well taught and the teacher plans to return next year. Strong regional travel issues were noted as Doniphan mud holes and washed-out bridges hinder farmers trading with Atchison. Only a township road remained passable, but it was rough and undrained. County and township officials were urged to repair routes until the Catholic cemetery road reopened. A farmer described how trading was limited to mail-order houses. An amusing flood country tale from Parsons recounted by W A Morris described a submerged barn, stock, and a water pump barely visible. Miss Maurine Ricks was selected to represent her conservatory at Denver music week in May, for piano solos, a notable honor. Last Sunday Miss Hicks gave a piano recital at the Colorado Woman’s College.
