Permit 101000 Stock Issue Extends Rail Line to Rochelle
The State Public Utilities commission authorized Lee County Central Electric railway to extend from Middlebury to Rochelle, approving a 101000 stock issue to fund the project. A new Democratic war tax passed last Saturday applies to nearly every business man in Ashton. Taxes affect legal papers insurance policies telegrams medicines and more with varying amounts. The Ashton Bank faces 89 dollars and Farmers State Bank 28. The Pastime theatre 25 and opera house 50. Pool rooms taxed on tables at five dollars plus 4.80 on tobacco. Beer taxed 1.75 per barrel. newspapers and freight shipments taxed as well.

Local Feeders Receive Big Sheep Shipment
Ashton named a countrywide sheep feeding center feeding hundreds of thousands for Chicago market. Local feeders bought 2 300 to 2 400 western sheep to fatten last Thursday. Fred Mall took two carloads, Herman and Charles Mall one carload, Jacob Aschenbrenner two carloads, W D Knapp three carloads. Cars were double decked, each holding 290 sheep. more expected next week.

Watts Named to Illinois State Board of Law Examiners
Judge James W. Watts of Dixon, long a practicing attorney in Ashton and former dean of Dixon College of Law, was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to the State Board of Law Examiners for a three year term at $1000 per year.
