The high school year opens with class pictures and plans for the Lyceum Course from the Redpath bureau. Pupils may pledge tickets, music lessons offered by Mr. Drummond, and an agriculture field study. a recital by Miss Lucile Randall was enjoyed with grammar pupils and Red Cross ladies. Donations to the Red Cross fund total 130.46 with new members joining. a card of thanks is extended for illness support.

Masonic Lodge Fifty Years Old in Ashton
Ashton Lodge No. 531 A F and A M marked its fiftieth birthday on October 1 with unobserved observance due to wartime drafts. The lodge formed October 1 1467 and only one of its original fourteen members, John P. Taylor of St Paul Nebraska, remains living. Current officers Paul W. Charters and Otto Schade have been called to colors. A Master Mason degree was conferred on Frank Elmer Chapman before his departure to Camp Grant as the lodge planned a larger celebration after the war.

Paul W Charters has been signally honored at Camp Grant and is now Sergeant Charters. He led twelve Lee County boys who reported September 1, and has kept busy aiming to prove himself a soldier. His promotion as supply sergeant is a high honor among the Lee County group. Other youths receive promotions including John J Duffey John L Rosbrook Fordan Tingle and Bert F Davis made corporals. Harry Hogan Medric Hussey and Harold L Spencer named acting corporals. William Ferguson transferred to division headquarters for clerical work. James Sterling moved to base hospital due to drug knowledge and Everett Dutcher chosen mess sergeant.

The third increment toward Lee County’s national army quota was called yesterday. Thirty five men will depart for Rockford this afternoon with naming of listed draftees from Dixon, Wyoming, Ashton, Palmyra, Marion, Nelson, Reynolds, China, Sublette, Scarboro, Rockford and other towns. Alternates named include Dwight Rolph and W W Hutchinson.

Men From Ashton Visit Polo Methodist Rally
A Polo Methodist rally day drew 65 men in 16 cars from Ashton for a Sunday service at Polo’s Methodist Episcopal church. Mr A W Rosecrans led the lesson and spoke to 600 pupils, with Miss Lucile Randall solo and Miss Miriam Rosecrans at the piano. Polo guests were warmly hosted, inviting Polo to visit Ashton next.

A sparsely attended race meet at Amboy fair grounds drew about 100 people with receipts of 18.30. Stars and Stripes Forever won the half mile, followed by Mack the Clipper and Bradford Boy.
