The Middle West Utilities and Illinois Northern Utilities agree to a control swap led by Banutel Insull. Illinois Northern stock valued at 4.65 million common and 2 million preferred will be exchanged for Middle West shares. Illinois Northern held assets from 21 prior utilities and operates near Public Service of Northern Illinois.

Train Strikes Auto at Unprotected Crossing

Dan Utz and family escaped injury after a freight train struck their five passenger Maxwell at Richardson Avenue crossing Sunday at four. The car was badly smashed but several occupants jumped in time. the crossing has long been considered dangerous due to obstructed eastbound view and calls for Northwestern to install protection.

Ash ton postmaster race as 1914 term ends

Endorsement figures favor Democrat Joseph A. Roesler for the Ashton postmaster job as Chadwick’s 1914 term expires. Roesler, a longtime Ashton resident and businessman, earned broad support from local Democrats and business leaders. The role pays 1200 dollars yearly with modest office expenses, and parcels post expansion may raise salaries.

Farewell for Rev English Leaves Ashton Franklin Grove

Shortage of help delays road work progress

Rock is being put on the road at about 100 yards per day but the project lags due to a contractor’s inability to hire six more workers for the stone quarry. Four wagons haul rock to the crusher while the crusher runs at half capacity and dynamite fuses the stone. The road north of Clayton Bowers farm advances toward the quarry with favorable weather hoped to allow completion before ground freezes.
