Enola Smucker 21 died after nurse training at Sherman hospital. funeral at First Baptist church. John J Wagner chosen chairman after board stalemate
John J Wagner of Bradford town was chosen yesterday morning as chairman of the county Board of Supervisors after a tight contest. The meeting began Tuesday with a deadlock on ballots. Wagner secured 18 votes on the second ballot to 12 for Cris Gross of China. Several members were present. staff lists and subscriptions were noted, and references to local figures appeared within the report.

Presbyterian church group the Philatheas hosted twenty two members last Friday evening with Mrs William Meister assisting. Local talent group presented His Last Chance last Thursday to raise funds for the M W A band, drawing a large audience and $89.10 in proceeds. Cast included Ida Eisenberg Minnie Aschenbrenner Tena Stephan Roland Eisenberg Will Klingenviel Roy Hartzell Carl Stephan Lloyd Attig, with strong staging and crowd applause. Vernon Shippee earned fourth place in thought and composition at the Illinois Interscholastic contest in DeKalb last Saturday. He bested rivals from Princeton Rockford Freeport and Oregon though his delivery pulled his overall ranking to sixth. Otis Walter also spoke among eight contestants in a five minute extempore session. Memorial day services will feature Rev. Cyrus Kellogg Stockwell as speaker with a citizens meeting set for May 6 at city hall to arrange observances. Ashton High School Alumni meet May 5 at the Presbyterian church to plan the June graduation event. Dr Roop of Farnklin Grove found Charles Gleim’s cows tuberculin free.

Ashton High School opened its season with a doubleheader win over Rock River Military Academy of Dixon 10 to 1 led by Paddock with 23 strikeouts and solid defense behind Will Wallace. The second game beat Franklin Grove 24 to 10 as Schafer took the mound for Ashton while Averill and Brown pitched for Franklin.
