George Schafer Sr celebrated his 88th birthday last Friday. He remains active and visits town with ease. Born in Germany in 1836, he emigrated to the United States in 1849, lived in Lee Center and Bradford township before moving to Ashton twenty-three years ago. This winter he resides with his son George F. Schafer and family.

Lee County Phone Rates Battle Settled By Commission
The State Utilities Commission orders a return to pre January 1 rates and refunds of tolls charged under new rates. The Dixon and Rochelle companies are targeted while Farmers’ Telephone reverts to old charges after disputes began at Amboy. The dispute arose when tolls on outside calls were introduced July 1 1913, despite the law requiring commission review. The outcome remains of keen interest to all parties.
