Derivation of Name Illinois in Early History

The name Illinois comes from Illini meaning superior men, with a French ending reflecting French and Indian intermixing in early American history. The Illini formed a powerful tribe in the Mississippi valley, rivaled by Iroquois and Sacs and Foxes, and starved Rock on the Illinois river marks their last tragedy. The term Sucker, linked to Galena lead mines, traces to Illinoisans.
