Ashton's big half holiday saw business houses close at two and a parade form at Horseshoe park led by a drum corps. Merchants wives joined in decorated autos making the procession nearly a half mile long. A hard fought ball game followed at Venerich grounds with North side winning 18 to 11 after a ninth inning rally and tied game.

Lloyd & Pelton of Dixon awarded the $687 bid for grading and filling the school yard and cement sidewalks. Other bids included Harold Lesslie 550 for grading, Lenox & Son 1507171, S. T. Zeller Jr. 1,225, Carl Stephan 400 for walks. Work began Monday and must be finished by August 16.

Four killed in auto train crash near Ul
A car carrying Dr Henry Greeley, his wife and guests Mr and Mrs E Wayne Richardson collided with a Burlington train at a grade crossing east of Lee DeKalb. Greeley and Mrs. Richardson died at the scene, Mrs Richardson and Mr Richardson perished later. Richardson survived severely injured but later died in Waterman hospital. The party had traveled from Chicago to visit Greeley’s brother in Waterman. The crossing was obscured by trees and the car could not see the train or hear it due to noise. Greeley and wife had recently moved to Lee and had many friends shocked by the tragedy.

Most Ashton residents spent the Fourth in Amboy for a large celebration with races. The Ashton band played a concert in the evening to a full crowd. About 54 autos, mainly from the countryside, were parked near the event. Local businesses closed at noon for the day. The band has recently added new members.

The 32nd Dixon District Camp Meeting opens at Franklin Grove at 1 30 this afternoon with a concert by the Franklin Grove band followed by an opening address by Bishop William Fraser McDowell of Chicago.
