Soldiers Write Home From Germany During Holidays 1918 1919

A wartime letter recalls Verdun’s brutal six month battle where about a million soldiers died and the field lay littered with skeletons. Musical Recital Enthralls Large Presbyterian Audience

The Presbyterian church was filled Friday evening as Mrs. F. J. Aikin daughter of Dr and Mrs Martin L English presented a piano recital. Accompanist and organist Mr John D Charters aided with three sung numbers by Mrs Charters. The program featured difficult music and drew widespread praise. Mrs Aikin plans to live with her parents and teach piano.

St John s Lutheran Church Ladies Aid and Orphans Aid Notices

St John's Lutheran Church announces a Ladies Aid meeting this Thursday with Mrs Wendt and a Sunday School at 9 45 with German service at 10 45. The Orphans Aid Society meets on Wednesday February 12 at the school house. Recent car purchases include Fred Hansen from Roadster, Will Lott, Oscar Wiener, George Hewert, and Fred Schafer from Clifford Knapp.

Mrs Wesley Beach Dies After Faithful Life in Ashton

Funeral services were held at the Ashton Methodist church for Phoebe A. Knapp Beach born September 6 1857 in Canada daughter of William and Jane Knapp who died February 1 191? at Wesley Hospital Chicago aged 61 years 1 month 26 days. She married Wesley Beach on March 7 1877 and leaves her husband two sons LeRoy and George and a brother Robert Knapp with many relatives. A devoted Christian since childhood she joined the Ashton Methodist church and lived a life of Christ like virtue inspiring family and community. she endured goiter surgeries with faith and was remembered as a noble wife mother and bible student whose influence will endure beyond death. The community and church mourn her loss while praising the life she built and the spiritual heritage she leaves. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church.

Premiums Given At Poultry Show In Ashton

Over 400 birds on display with large attendance and strong sales. Ashton’s first poultry exhibition closed a successful week as entries from Barred Plymouth Rocks to Wyandottes earned top honors. Winners include George A. Putman, C. H. Lock, Edwin F. Anderson, Archie King, Jolin F. Canfenkt, G. A. Hamel, and J. W. Griese for multiple breeds. Continued on Page 5.
