The post office imposes uniform box rents based on box size and location, effective January 1. Rates rise by ten cents for most boxes while call boxes stay at current prices, with payment due within ten days before the new quarter.
In 1832 Dixon’s Ferry stood on Rock River sixty five miles above its mouth as a frontier outpost. John Dixon hosted travelers, ran the ferry, traded with miners and Indians, and grew popular with both communities. His influence rose until 1840 when he carried the United States land office from Galena to Dixon, a feat begun with no backing and met with disbelief from Galena. Continued on page 8.
A meeting of Ashton High School graduates to organize an alumni association was held in the school building with about twenty attending. W R McKnight spoke on the benefits. Frank D Chadwick, class of 1895, was named temporary chairman as plans for the group were outlined. The task includes compiling a complete graduate list, with searches for pre 1890 records and a call for all graduates to send names for a forthcoming Friday January 4 meeting.
A Bloomington stock man, Jacob Funk, won the grand prize at the International Stock Show in Chicago and set a $17 per hundred hoof price. He credited a feeding change including meat and oats by morning and molasses with corn by night, plus strict confinement to improve condition.
Miss Ellen Little born Canada September 1841 died December 21 1906 at 1245 am. She moved to Illinois as a child and lived in Ashton with various families before settling with W H Bates for eight years. She favored reading and solitude, believed in a hereafter, and kept Bible notes and hymns closely. Short services were held at the house Sunday with Rev. J R Hamilton, burial in Waterman on December 24 1906.
