Two New Lieutenants From Ashton Are Commissioned

Two Ashton men have earned new military commissions. DeWitt C. Ellinwood is named second lieutenant in the aviation section, while Harrison Wagner is commissioned second lieutenant of Field Artillery. Wagner, a graduate of the Central Officers Training School at Camp Taylor Kentucky, both enter the Officers Reserve and will be called for two weeks of service annually.

A White Christmas Brings Blizzard Snow Across Region

A February snowstorm blankets the area with eight to ten inches of wet snow after a mild start to winter. The cold front arrives with heavy snowfall, adding to coal needs for residents as the weather turns harsher. United Evangelical Church activities listed at Ashton and Bradford include Bible study, preaching, and officer elections, led by Pastor E K Yeakel.

Death Saddens Ashton Community and Nearby Families

The Ashton area mourns multiple deaths from influenza and pneumonia. Conrad Kibbe died Christmas morning after days of illness, Mrs. Forrest Paddock passed away Sunday, and Mrs. Frederick G. Schafer of Bradford township died after ten days of illness. Florence Hutchinson, a John M. Krug sister, remained among the living as the community grieves. Funeral services for Kibbe and Hutchinson are planned locally, with other memorials and remembrances noted.

Katherine Hickey and Thomas Burke united in marriage on Wednesday December 18 at 7 30 am by Rev. Paul Bourke. Witnesses included Matthew J Hickey of Chicago and Katherine Burke. Miss Hickey, Lincoln hospital night nurse, well liked. Mr Burke a farmer near Lee. They will reside on the Lee area.

Philatheas Entertained With Song and Christmas Tree

The Philatheas gathered Wednesday evening at Miss Katherine Grifith's home with Mrs. John D. Charters, Mrs. Robert Sanders, and Mrs. George B. Garrett assisting. They sang current war songs led by Mrs. Charters, enjoyed a Christmas tree, and each guest recited a rhyme to receive a gift. Refreshments followed and Mrs. Charters performed a solo titled A Perfect Day.

Christmas Program Annulled By Death

The Methodist Sunday school Christmas program scheduled for Christmas Eve was canceled due to deaths causing sadness in several homes. Children of the Primary department will be remembered next Sunday morning as they would have been on Christmas Eve. Delco Light Charles Hunter.
