Tourtillott Catches Thief After 18 Mile Midnight Chase

Sheriff Tourtillott traced and captured James Thompson after an 18 mile chase, locating him at farmer Crofts' home south of the city. Thompson had hired a horse from Blackman Hubbard livery, fled toward Dixon and Chicago, and left the horse lame at a Killmer farm before heading to Crofts' place where he had worked as a hand. He is jailed awaiting tomorrow's trial.

Illinois Keeps Right of Way of the Canal Post Election

Governor Deneen proclaims that selling the lands of the Illinois and Michigan canal failed in the November 6 election. Attorney General Stead notes a majority of all votes cast was required. Canvassing shows the ballot received a majority of votes cast, but not a majority of all votes.

Local suit filed over 1500 damage claim in Bradford area

John Hunt filed a $1500 damage suit Wednesday afternoon in the circus court against the Farmers Telephone Company of Lee County. The company operates in Bradford, China, Ashton and Amboy townships. P. J. McMillan witnessed the play Be Hut in Chicago Saturday evening. it was the last performance.

Illinois 88 Years Since Admission Commemoration Sought

The 88th anniversary of Illinois statehood passed with little notice. A movement by the historical society aims to later honor the date, recalling Wisconsin border disputes, the 1818 enabling act, and the early struggles of Illinois including the 40,000 population requirement and the first convention at Kaskaskia. Will Contest the Election in Lee County Treasurers Race

The Democratic organization plans to contest the Lee County treasurer election of John M. Sterling after a 45 vote margin. Mayor Johnson of Amboy filed a 23 page petition alleging errors in every precinct and the case may be set for trial early next week. Ballots are to be recounted in the county judge and clerk presence, with added observers possible. Miss Lizzie Schuchart visited Rockford to see sister Mrs Cris Sipple.
