Letters from Otto Schade in France October 1918

In early October 1918 Corporal Otto Schade writes from an old French town near Paris, describing travel by Pullman and box cars, living in multistory homes, grape and wine country, warm weather, and friendly locals. He notes moving squads, hopeful front lines, and daily life away from combat, closing with a promise to continue the update.

Minneapolis Fire Zone Destruction and Rescue Efforts

A first person account from October 20 1918 describes a Motor Reserve Corps unit’s grueling relief mission after a massive fire in North Dakota or Minnesota. The writer details smoke fog burned bridges rivers planks across creeks and dangerous road conditions while rescuing and conveying food and supplies to thousands. They recount recovering over 400 bodies locating starving families and pulling victims from wells root cellars and roadside holes. The narrative ends noting continued searches and a page 3 continuation.

Adopt 11 French Children in Need of Aid

The Lee County committee on this work urges funds by New Year’s Day to support The Fatherless Children of France. About 600,000 orphans exist in France, with 490,000 cared for by the government. Americans must aid the rest. Ashton has pledged to support eleven orphans, and readers are asked to send their names to Mrs. J. C. Griffith.

The Christian Endeavor group will meet next Sunday at 6 o'clock. The topic is The Cross in the Philippines led by John Charters. Special music is planned and all members plus friends are welcome.

Veterans Return Home From Training and Service

Robert M. Tilton who attended the officers training school at Camp Gordon Alabama has returned home. Wallace Clover came home Friday from Evanston. On Saturday evening Sergt Glenn C. Rosecrans was mustered out at the automobile school in Chicago.

Red Cross Drive Sets Town Hall Membership Monday

Lee County residents are urged to join the Red Cross on Monday December 16 as part of the national membership drive directed by the State Council of Defense. Ashton township aims for full participation with town hall open the day of the drive and Lafayette township hosts a Saturday campaign at Prairie Star and Yorty school houses from noon to 3 pm.
