Mail Planes Land After Engine Trouble In County Farm Field
Two air mail planes faced forced landings last week. A German monoplane piloted by H. H. Rowe and mechanic D. A. Martin escaped a catastrophe by landing in a plowed field on Leonard Gerber’s farm when spark plug porcelain broke and fire spurted. They crawled free as locals arrived. The mail sacks weighed 881 pounds. one sack was empty. Mechanics from Chicago repaired the craft, and it flew back to Chicago. A second American biplane piloted by D. C. White landed safely at Early Dawn farm where engine trouble forced a landing. The town’s postmaster received the mail and repairs followed.
