Ashton Public School Opens With Larger Quarters Planned
The Ashton Public School enters its 41st year in the current building as crowded conditions force the board to rent the Lutheran school house to house the Primary and related grades. The high school will be the largest yet with 63 pupils, aided by an extra teacher. Three new instructors join, and a fourth floor assembly area remains unused due to safety concerns. Changes include a new civil government course and revised texts in arithmetic.

Pioneer Mrs Wingert Dies In Franklin Grove
Mrs. John Wesley Wingert a Lee county pioneer died at her Franklin Grove home last Wednesday after months of illness. Born Hannah Maria Hittle in Berwick Pennsylvania, she moved to Nachusa township in 1842 and lived in Lee county most of her life. She married John W. Wingert in 1869 and leaves six children, a sister, and a brother. Funeral services were held at her home and the Franklin Grove Methodist church with Rev. Wm. Loofbourrow officiating.

Elks Plan Labor Day Clam Bake With 1500 To 2000 Guests
The Dixon lodge of Elks will stage a clam bake on Labor Day, September 4, expecting 1,500 to 2,000 attendees. Rain won't spoil it with 25 tents on standby. Tickets cost 1.50, open to any member’s friends, and a massive menu includes 188,000 clams, 500 pounds blue fish, 600 spring chickens, eight barrels of sweet potatoes, 35 bushels Irish potatoes, 5,000 ears corn, and 1,000 loaves bread.
