A wartime letter from Harry Vaupel in France, July 1918, recounts daily life in a hospital ward near Rouen, longing for books, requests for motorcycle or truck work, and updates on fronts with sparing humor about German actions, weather, windmills, and furlough hopes.
The record lists service members across branches including Navy Army Marine Corps and Air Service with ranks and units such as Heavy Artillery Ordnance Dept Coast Artillery Aviation Field Artillery and Medical Detach. The names span many families and regions reflecting broad wartime staffing and recognition.
Funeral services were held Monday for William C. Schafer born January 25 1864 in Bradford township died August 16 1918 age 54 years 6 months and 22 days. He married I Ackerman in 1888 and was a prosperous farmer. Survivors include widow three daughters two grandsons four brothers and three sisters. Also noted is Illinois state centennial celebration with Lee County fair set for August 27 featuring Children’s Day free admission, contests and speakers Henry Rathbone Frank Stevens and Adams Cliffe. Community events include soil improvement exhibits and various free attractions.
The Gazette announces a government mandated reduced paper usage starting September 15. Newspapers magazines and subscribers in arrears will lose copies and mail service until payments are current, with sworn monthly usage reports to authorities to ensure compliance.
The Red Cross unit of Ashton township met Thursday with 45 attendees. A quilt top by Mrs. Eliza Randall will be sold to the best advantage at the work room. Pinafores are being finished by August 25. Two meetings are scheduled next week, with strong turnout hoped for.
The Fourth Liberty Loan will run from September 28 to October 19. Authors urge American unity and sacrifice, noting European observers and enemies will gauge home support for the war effort and soldiers in Europe. Readers are urged to back the loan to aid troops and test national loyalty, asking if money should be spared while soldiers risk their lives.
Carl Vaupel of Co F 108 Engrs writes from Laredo Texas in August 1918 about his long travel delay, weather, and living conditions. He notes 800 white residents with many Mexicans, extreme heat, scarce crops, and poor water needing boiling. Continued on Page 4.
Notice states Minnie Thome has left home and the author will not be responsible for her debts. It notes 2513 Christies and mentions John J Thome installing a new system at the grocery for handling food products as a five addition to the store.
Robert H. Scott, former county judge, announces his candidacy for county judge in Lee County. He is known in the locality for credited service and promises full-time, efficient, and impartial administration if elected.
A tractor demonstration with plowing and discing will be held at B G Venerichs farm one half mile west of Ashton on September 5 and 6. Machines include Waterloo Boy 12 25 and Titian 10 20 tractors John Deere engine plows and Keystone disc harrows. Demonstration led by Ventler and Klingebiel.
Presiding Elder Rev. B. R. Schultze preaches Friday at Bradford and Saturday at Ashton at 2:00 PM. Quarterly conference follows preaching at Ashton with reports. Communion to follow Sunday at Ashton morning and Bradford afternoon. Pastor E. K. Yeakel notes attendance. Glenn Beach visits from Great Lakes Training Camp.
County Superintendent L W Miller outlines Lee County education data for the fiscal year ending, noting 164 districts, 150 one room rural schools, 270 teaching positions with 23 men and 247 women, and total salaries of 21 615.82 for men and 119 114.20 for women.
