Gustave Hoernecke a longtime Pine Rock resident died at Lincoln hospital Rochelle after hernia surgery followed by heart trouble He was born November 20 1849 in Saxony Germany and came to the United States in 1874 He married Minnie Schaffax in 1874 and they had four children He and his wife were active in the Evangelical Lutheran church at Paynes Point Funeral services were held at his home and Paynes Point with Rev F Englehart and Rev John Taurus.

Lee County War Record Sets Proud National Example
During World War I Lee County raised a total of 6 316 641.24 for war purposes with 157 738.91 given to relief societies including the Red Cross and YMCA. Subscriptions to War Savings Stamps and Liberty Bonds reached 602 000 and 5 548 300 respectively, with Lee leading fifty seven counties in the Seventh District for Victory Loan. Delinquents were few and their names recorded in county history. The Woman's Council of National Defense added 9 720.49, and other agencies contributed to aid French children. In Methodist notes, local church activities and missions are outlined, including an August 10 schedule and the annual Woman’s Missionary Society picnic at Bradford. A sale closed when Adam Faber sold his ice cream parlor to F P Oberg of Cherry Valley, with Faber remaining in operation briefly. Mrs J C Webster of Dixon visited.

Fire Destroys Farm Buildings on Schawhacker Place
A Sunday night blaze four miles northwest of Ashton destroyed all farm buildings except the residence and a small hog shed on the Schawhacker place. Four horses were aboard, three saved by Forrest Paddock, the finest horse burned. Hay origin suspected. insurance carried on the horses. Barn new, nearly completed, and many workers fought the flames.
