The Ashton council plans an election after voters petition. preliminary work ahead as Tampico water system details are reviewed. Tampico’s 11000 bond plan and water infrastructure face scrutiny while Ashton weighs funding and levy limits. Stanwood Griffith catches a 30 pound catfish at Dixon Assembly Grounds.
The Postmaster General recommends replacing horses with automobiles on rural routes and lengthening routes to fifty miles. The House committee included this in a bill to pay rural carriers $1,800 yearly for fifty mile routes, up from $1,200, with $600 for cheap automobile purchase and maintenance.

The Benedicts defeated the Bachelors 15 to 6 in a postmeridian matchup. Jeter and Winder hit home runs for the Benedicts while Yenerich’s field produced a three-base hit for the Bachelors. Paddock to Ellinwood and Winder to Jonker completed double plays.
A series of political notices announce candidacies in Lee County for Congress District 18, Senatorial District 35, Sheriff, and County Treasurer. John C. McKenzie seeks GOP support for Congress, Adam C. Cliffe for Senate, A T Tortiulout for Sheriff, and Joan E. Moyer for County Treasurer, all aiming at the September 9 primary in 1914.

Andrew Jackson Drummond, longtime Lafayette township resident and civic leader, died Tuesday at 92. Born October 20, 1821 in Westmoreland PA, he moved to Ohio with his family and settled in Lafayette grove in 1838. He served as justice of the peace, assessor, supervisor, and school director, and spent his final years with his son Benton and daughter Mrs. Hogan. He supported Democratic ideals and helped shape local citizenship. The funeral was held at his daughter’s home with Rev. Fremont McCague officiating.
The 1914 Franklin Grove Chautauqua runs Friday to Wednesday with fifty speakers led by J. K. Codding Mohammad Ali and Col. G. A. Gearhart. Brook's Symphony Orchestra and Imperial English Bell Ringers headline, plus The Mason Jubilee singers and other acts. Tickets available at Gazette Book Store. City council hires James H. M B Griffith and Henry Stephan spent the week camping at Grand Detour. They hiked the distance in seven hours carrying a pole with their tent cooking utensils and provisions on their shoulders.
A reader notes people desire a 25 cent coin despite warnings about a hoodoo. The item supposedly bears thirteen symbols in its design including in the eagle beak wings tail feathers and shield. The claim cites thirteen leaves on a branch and the words quater doltar.
