George Henry Brewer Founder Of Ashton Pioneer Dies

George Henry Brewer, an early settler and charter member of Ashton’s Presbyterian church, died April 3 after years of hip injury and illness. Born in 1833 in Stockbridge, he moved west at 23, taught school across Illinois, bought a farm near Ashton, married Abigail Twiss in 1857, and raised five children. A respected teacher and churchman, he endured frontier hardships and helped shape the community’s early development.

Lafayette Was Them Beat Sandwich Union Band Organized 1875

Incomplete returns yesterday morning place Ralph J. Dean on the Republican ticket with about 138000 votes. Wayman beats Small for second, Walter Clyde Jones loses to Dick Yates for fourth. Later returns may alter the results as Sherman leads for U S Senator with Shelby and Magill close behind.

George W Pierce 56 Dies After Long Illness

George W Pierce brother of Harry Pierce of this city died Saturday morning at his home two miles east of the Yorty schoolhouse after a long illness with the grip. Born February 9, 1856 in Claimant Delaware near Philadelphia he was 56 years old. He came west with his parents 38 years ago and settled near Rochelle. He married Katie Huston on December 7 1880 and leaves three children Orpha Bemis Flagg Center Raymond Shell Rock Iowa and Sadie at home. Survived by his parents and four brothers. Funeral Tuesday 10:30 am at his home conducted by Rev Pearley Shult. Burial at Flagg Center.

Odd Fellows Installation At Ashton Lodge No 977

Friday evening semi annual installation of officers for Ashton Lodge No 977 Independent Order of Odd Fellows with 8S T Zell er as installing officer. Officers installed include electives and appointive ranks. Also notes a local resident offering plow gardens haul ashes and general teaming services. Telegram style updates mention depot platform measurements and railroad work including stone blast and track height changes near Rochelle. Mrs Charles Hunter visited Rochelle Tuesday.

Iron ore discovery sparks Bradford township drill site buzz

In Bradford township a new well on the Adam Eisenberg farm four miles south of the city yielded iron pebbles from 70 to 80 feet deep. Ul rich Brothers of Amboy drill the well and sent samples for analysis amid hope of a rich ore deposit, with surface sandstone suggesting high quality ore.
