Dr Mc Arthur awarded judgment for the defendant in Wellington on a case where the plaintiff sold a freak foal and calves with tent and poles for £200. The show promised weekly returns of £76 to £112 but failed to deliver. The magistrate found the plaintiff responsible for the situation and dismissed the claim.
Seventeen Chinese passengers disembarked in Dunedin from the Maheno voyage from Melbourne. Of the sixteen, fifteen are new arrivals. Three head for Dunedin, one for Lyttelton, and the balance to Wellington.
An informal meeting of the High School Board was held today September 29 lacking formal gazette of time place and chairman name, as promised. The omission caused the session to be informal and unsettled.
A September deputation urged codification of native land laws to end chaos. The Premier said steps would be taken to appoint a commission and formalize the process.

Melbourne September 29 The Huddart Parker Company and Appleton managing director were fined £5 each for refusing to answer a question under the Anti Trust Act. Evidence showed they followed solicitor advice claiming no legal obligation to answer and that the Act was intra vires. The case was intended as a test and will be taken to the High Court with an early final settlement sought by both parties.
In Invercargill on September 20 Mr A J D Fraser MP for Napier was toasted at Wyndham with a gold locket for opposing a £5000 grant to Meikle. About 160 attendees heard eulogies. Fraser pledged to protect the public purse, and a unanimous resolution urged MPs to resist further votes. Meikle spoke at another crowded meeting.
Mr Joseph Gealy representing Crown tenants on the Canterbury Land Board told a Timaru Herald reporter that lessees should have renewal rights subject to revaluation. He favored longer leases, but not wide subdivision, and suggested two Timaru meetings annually for the Board to hear grievances.
Otago Golf Club defeated Timaru 43 to 12 to win the Orbell Cup in fine weather at Dunedin. Otago also swept the ladies singles 15 to 4 and men’s singles 15 to 8. In foursomes Otago won 13 to 6. New Zealand ladies championship entrants include Rattray Gould Roberts Mill Williams Scott and Fotheringham among others.
The United States Circuit Court of Appeals reversed Judge Landis Chicago and Indiana Company fines of 5 8 000 000 in the Standard Oil case. It held evidence should have been admitted to show intent and that punishing a non indicted party twenty nine times the capital stock is improper. The decision was unanimous and may reach the Federal Supreme Court. Public reaction ties the ruling to party politics and anti trust campaigns.
