A reader notes speeches by three candidates Gobbe Nosworthy and Jones. Gobbe backs state banks and tax on Emperor Joseph. Nosworthy impresses a five hundred strong audience with a strong Liberal working man appeal.
A large crowd attended the horse fair conducted by the local ranch of the New Zealand Farmers' Co operative Association. Over 60 mixed classes entered, with improved demand and several entries selling at satisfactory prices. Notable prices included draught geldings and mares in the £11 to £86 range, and hacks fetching £8 to £22.
Wheat demand rises with North Island millers and fowl feed needs. Prices firm, up to 48 2d. paid at country stations. Pearl and Tuscan preferred by mills with 4s 2d expected for Pearl. Auckland receives 1000 tons of flour from Australia. Oats and chaff slow. £5 offered. Potatoes moving slowly as supply tightens.
In Timaru the past week saw little grain trading. Wheat sold modestly at 4s 3d delivered to a mill. oats show steady demand. Gartons shipments traded 2s for B grade and 2s 1d for A grade. Danish 1s 1d to 2s 2d fob. Potatoes dormant with 75s to 80s per ton quoted. chaff 82s 6d to 85s. stock levels remain high and unchanged.
The author argues against weakening prohibitory liquor laws by comparing sly grog myths to real enforcement. Citing Ireland and New Zealand, they urge strict police vigilance, magistrate enforcement, and removal of noncompliant judges to stamp out illicit distillation and sly grog selling.
In Christchurch on October 22 the Diocesan Synod debated opium traffic and adopted a resolution commending China’s efforts to curb opium and urging Britain to use full force to terminate the trade. The Bishop was asked to send a copy of the resolution to the Archbishop of Canterbury.
A. G. Gallon sued W. C. Ordish for £291 damages from a bush fire during a drought. The claim was reduced to £91. The Magistrate ruled the plaintiff must prove Ordish lit a fire on February 6 causing March 1 damage. only a fire on the first was proven and origin unclear. Plaintiff non-suited with £20 costs.
Melbourne reports Dr Poulton of South Australia presented a study at the Australian Medical Congress on tuberculosis in Adelaide hospitals. Over six years 1819 cases showed 42 percent with non pulmonary lesions, and among 4082 Commonwealth deaths over 19 percent involved similar non pulmonary tuberculosis manifestations. The most eloquent paper, read by Dr ted, was titled The airi.
Letters from Adelaide and South Fremantle claim Warner's Safe Cure cured kidney and bladder ailments after other medicines failed. Patrons Mr Alex of Wallase Wakefield Street and Mrs J Stevens of Mandura Broad recount restore from gravel, sediment, and inflammation. Concentrated version now sold at 25 6d per bottle.
