Professor Macmillan Brown notes a religious shift across Japan as educated youths drift from traditional faiths toward Christianity. He cites political influence of Protestant Christians, urban church leaders, and ongoing reforms, while highlighting education drives and rice-driven poverty increasing hardship from harvest failures and税 increases.
The Union Company's training ship Dartford arrived at Wellington on October 6 and 7. She will be fitted to educate twenty or thirty boys in seamanship and navigation.
The British Antarctic expedition ship Nimrod undergoes final internal preparations for departure from Lyttelton to bring back Lieutenant Shackleton and his team. Stores for thirty eight men for twelve months are ready, sixty tons from Home, Tongariro supplies, and 306 tons coal loaded. Captain Eyana to command, Nimrod due to sail December 1, despite ongoing stays in Sydney for RNR training and crew adjustments.
The Department of Agriculture reports nine divisional sections with rising land under cultivation by 514,614 acres and 1,029 more holdings over one acre. Exports reached £17,000,475 with total produce export £19,678,573. Wheat area shrank due to drought. 193,031 acres yielded 28 bushels each. Wool exports totaled 158,221,162 lb. mutton and lamb carcases valued at £2.99 million. sheep flocks rose by 1,465,281 while cattle fell by 35,401 heads. Pork farming barely grew. horses up 10,108, mostly in the North Island.
The London Daily Chronicle notes thousands of Maca in Scotland and Ireland, but MecPikes clan seems extinct in its historic home and survives only in the United States and New Zealand. Wagene I. McPike of Chicago seeks namesakes here, finding McPikes in Pennsylvania archives and a NZ Mr Edward McPike of Auckland. Edward’s father left Belfast sixty years ago. if any MacPiko survivors exist they likely live in Belfast.

On the Athenic today Mr. G Rolleston, son of the late Hon W Rolleston, arrived as British Trade Commissioner to New Zealand. He credited Sir Joseph Ward with his appointment, noting the Imperial Conference emphasized placing British traders’ representatives in the colonies. Rolleston will base his headquarters in Wellington.
The discovery of Edward Gibbon Wakefield's grave in an old cemetery prompts talk on a suitable memorial. Chief Justice Sir Robert Stout writes to the Times hoping for a fitting tribute to the colony's foundation. He says he has spoken with the Premier and received memoranda urging imperishable remembrance.
At a Dunedin Presbytery meeting Rev R Sutherland spoke on wire-pulling in connection with Rev J Gibson Smith's book Christ of the Cross. Sutherland refused to name the accused. Rev A Cameron denounced him as cowardly. One minister left in protest. The Presbytery exonerated Cameron from the charges.
