Sydney reports the barquentine Kate Tatham capsized in Newcastle harbour during a squall while loading coal for New Zealand. The crew and captain escaped to the rails. one youth named Reifs was trapped in the hold for two hours before rescue by the carpenter from the ship.
Gisborne, November 2 The nautical inquiry into the Joss of the barque Constance Craig heard evidence from customs officials harbourmaster and the ship’s owner. The court found the vessel sailed from Gisborne in July and, not seen since, was lost at sea around July 15. The ship left to find ballast and was seaworthy at departure.
The St John Ambulance Society collected across the city on Saturday November 3 with many ladies stationed at street corners from morning to evening. The sum raised totals over £800, excluding small further receipts to come. The association will also receive about £500 from a bequest in the will of the late Mr T H Menamen of Torawhiti.

The building was insured for 300 pounds and furniture for 150 pounds. The Tavistock Hotel at Waipukurau was destroyed by fire last night valued at 3200 pounds.
