Legal reformers in the Imperial Parliament back a bill to end anomalies in English divorce law. It would automatically convert five year judicial separation orders to divorce if no cohabitation occurred, and extend jurisdiction to district tribunals as part of Matrimonial Clauses.
May 13 Addington market reports larger yarding across stock classes. Fat lambs firmer with upward price tendency. store sheep stronger in quality. Fat cattle heavy yarding with prices broadly unchanged. Pigs and shop stock show softer demand and lower bids amid abundant offerings.
Italian engineer Count Piscicelli Peaggi proposes an electric post system using a wireway between major cities. A torpedo shaped carrier travels at 250 miles an hour with letters split from the motor section and balance wheels to maintain stability at speed.
A Melbourne style testimonial claims Doan's Backache Kidney Pills cured a long standing backache and kidney pains of Mrs. N Black of Ashburton. The notice urges readers to seek relief for backache headaches and urinary symptoms and notes the product is sold by chemists at 3s per box or six boxes for 16s 6d, with Foster McClellan Co. handling orders.
The article notes the Austrian Emperor will reach sixty years on the throne next August after succeeding Ferdinand I in 1848. It recalls his coronation in 1867, his tactful rule over a diverse empire, and personal sorrows including Archduke Rudolph’s 1889 death and the 1885 assassination of Empress Elizabeth. Market report from Lonedin notes oats firm across all grades with an advance over last week. Seed lines quoted 2s 6d to 2s 54d, prime milling 2s 5d to 2s 54d, mid to inferior 23 2d to 25 3d. Wheat gains seen as Australian markets lift prices with prime milling 4s 10d to 5s. Stocks low. pow wheat improved, quotations for various qualities listed.
A Brisbane Post report notes Queensland land offers attract New Zealand settlers with 20 year payments at about £3 10s an acre and rail projects to open new areas. Mr Morrison says climate is generally mild and wind can bite in winter but remains optimistic about Queensland’s prospects.
