Gala committees have pushed work on the gala for children and adults. The revised sports programme lists a 160 pound prize fund and a massed school children display. A picture entertainment at His Majesty's Theatre is set for Monday to raise gala funds.
At a recent Ashburton Swimming Club meeting the balance sheet showed a credit balance of about £20 including donations, with prize money also around £20. The club plans Domain swimming bath events and considers a carnival among Ashburton schools to boost youth swimming.
The season starts March 22 at the Theatre Royal with a major boxing tournament. Top boxers include Terris Stoddart Alexander Gibson Hooper McPhail Sullivan and others as new pupils train under Mr H Freeman. McCleary vs McKenna and Terris vs Howell headline a card that local clubs anticipate will draw a record crowd.
The final of the games p 7h saw Bathgate defeat Franz Eis by 9 games to Bathgate. Six ladies entered the club championship with Miss Si Mi isa Smith among entrants. In the men's singles, Bevin defeated Bonnington 6 0 6 2, Holford beat Mulligan 6 8 6 2, and Grubb beat Pinfold 6 3 9 11 6 3. Mrs Waterston, soon to leave Ashburton, attended tennis afternoon with lady members for doubles play and tea.
Ashburton faced Dunsandel Saturday losing 85 to 76 in Christchurch. The Ashburton champions Madden Galbraith Higgins and McLachlan were eliminated in the first round of the Champion of Champions. The Ashburton doubles team remain in contention with two wins and reach the semi final. Ashburton Club plans eight rinks to Timaru next Thursday for the Bristol Cup against Timaru WD.
Results from Ashburton High School girls swimming events last week list Aline McClurg as champion with 20 points. Edna Humphreys and Fanny Bayliss tied for second with 9 points each, across multiple races including sprints, distance, and specialty strokes.
Large turnout at the Hinds Athletic Club hall on Saturday. Mr W. J. S. McDowell chaired the meeting and officials for the sports were elected. A storeroom for materials was approved and expert track advice was to be sought next meeting. J Cook and Rev J F Feron expected partial duties soon.
