Banks in New Zealand have agreed to raise fixed deposit rates by half a percent. Advances rates are not fixed uniformly and are left to branch managers discretion, reflecting mortgage money demand and deposit costs. Banks aim to keep rates fair and avoid disrupting trade.
At Dunedin on March 4 a total yarding of 3176 sheep saw wethers down 1s per head and ewes 2s lighter. Lambs 1175 penned were steady overall with store lambs up 1s. Pigs 130 yarded showed thin demand with porkers and baconers largely steady. Cattle 262 yarded with prime range £9-£10 and lower grades £5-£7.

Sheep entries were large with improved feed outlook lifting prices by 5s to 8s 6d per head. Pigs saw a small entry and good demand with finishes up to £5, baconets 50s-60a, heavy to 70s. Large stores 25s-28s 6d, medium 90s-24 3d, small 8s-12s.
Canterbury Charitable Aid Board discusses housing destitute incurables at Christchurch meeting. Proposals include wings at Woolston and Ashburton Homes, with a forty person capacity, and shifting responsibility to a forthcoming amending Bill. Debate questions who should manage such care and whether existing homes suffice. The motion to defer the matter was carried.
The Maori bushman Henare Matenga faced the Supreme Court at Gisborne on theft charges from a bush camp. Defense questioned sanity while Matenga testified that years of evading pursuit, fear of being shot, and past gunfire drove him to carry a gun. He was convicted and sentenced to twelve months.

At the YMCA Club swimming carnival in Auckland last night the main event was the 100 yards championship. The result lists M. E. camp as a competitor and notes a time of 65 1- sec, with details indicating the defence counsel raised a matter during the event.
At three this morning the Te Anau, leaving the Queen's wharf inner berth, collided with the Acawa moored at another berth. Damage totaled hundreds of pounds with fractured plates and bent angle frames on the Arawa and damage to a shelter teck-house. Arawa to leave tonight for Lyttelton for repairs. Te Anau uninjured and departed for Picton at eight.
