Juvenile Depravity Case In Warwickshire Court
In Invaroargill on June 14 the Supreme Court heard two charges from the Wyndham case. Barbara Cushnie a fourteen year old girl gave birth to a child which was smothered and Neil Douglas was charged with indecently hurting the girl on several occasions. Douglas claimed he believed she was over sixteen. He testified his quarters were on a barn on the girl’s father’s farm and she came there of her own accord. The judge noted the girl’s precocious behavior and that she seemed to be over sixteen. Douglas was found guilty and sentenced to three years hard labour. The judge cited lack of proper training for the girl and possible inducements, but law protected such girls. John Woods, twenty three, also faced the same offense with the same girl, pleaded guilty. Hood noted this case differed in character from Woods. The ruin of the girl could not be placed at Woods’ door. The other prisoner’s intervention and the offender’s conduct influenced the case. Woods was given probation for twelve months on paying costs of ten dollars.
