New Zealand Supreme Court Upholds Fraud and Robbery Verdicts

At Napier on June 12 the Supreme Court heard sentences for Frederick Hampson and James Willoughby found guilty of obtaining money by false pretences. Hampson received two years in reformative detention while Willoughby must repay 19 pounds and pay 11 pounds costs, with six months imprisonment in default. David Collins and John Davis faced charges of robbery and assault against Robert Black Adams and attempting to defeat the course of justice. both were found guilty of assault and of attempting to defeat justice, with sentence deferred.

Ministers stance on Sunday closures debates marble bars

A telegram from June 7 reports Hon J M Wilford telling a deputation from the Council of Churches he disagreed with their demand to close marble bars on Sundays but agreed with the Chief Justice that such works are necessary and should stay open. He will present their views to Cabinet though not in full sympathy.

Home again from war in Auckland reports Draft No E66 of invalided soldiers arriving at night. Many were severely wounded from the New Zealand division’s recent action north of Albert.
