The High Commissioner’s June 2 update notes lower meat prices due to Argentine beef abundance and active New Zealand lamb demand. It lists New Zealand mutton at 8d per lb, Argentine mutton and lamb at 10d and 1d, and various beef quotes, with butter showing a weaker tone and mixed dairy pricing.
June 6 Dunedin cattle penning shows 112 fat cattle with mostly medium and unfinished sorts. Best bulls 16 to 21 pounds, cows 21 12s 6d, medium 12 to 14, sheep 2140 penned with prime prices up to 8s to 4s, wethers 56s to 50s, lambs 895 penned with best 43s and mediums 26s to 29s, exporters active and keen competition.
About 6000 sheep were yarded at Geraldine with a healthy attendance and satisfactory prices. Fat ewes and lambs sold across a wide range of prices, including fat ewes to 32s 13d, fat lambs up to 35s, and store ewes around 16s to 34s 9d. Cattle and pigs also featured with cows sold to £22 17s 6d and porkers at 47s.
At Addington on June 6 fat cattle and fat sheep led the market with a large fat cattle yarding and strong demand, export interest steady. store sheep sold well especially wethers and fat lambs at firmer prices. Pigs and dairy cows sold well, while store cattle were lean with poor calf quality. Prices ranged with fats firm near close and better lambs and wethers drawing strong competition.
