It extols Charity and social joy, culminating in the ideal of laboring for enduring, nation or world changing thoughts, with the happiest being one who spreads comfort to others, a view attributed to Dliss Martinean.
Madame Patti, aged 64, told a Paris interviewer she preserves youth by abstaining from red meat and red wine. She keeps a draft window open in winter and summer, with screens to shield her face from cold air.
The Yorkshirs Post reports on wine adulteration linked to German chemical methods. It cites Reichstag debates in which appalling falsifications of Rhine and Moselle wines are described, with hundreds of trials, thousands in fines, and large illicit glycerine and acid purchases, warning of unsafe beverages poured to consumers.

Mr G A Mithickly of Lagrhor estate Ashburton recounts aboard the Nimrod as the tow by the Koonya faced hurricane gales and mountainous seas. The Nimrod rode out the storm with the Koonya maintaining a lee position and the crew weathering overcrowding, cargo loss, and ponies enduring salt drenched feed.
The Nimrod might have been blown hundreds of miles eastward by the Koonya, delaying or preventing its approach to pack ice. If forced to return to New Zealand, the expedition would fail to achieve its objective.
Market report for the week ending Friday January 24 1908 notes harvesting in full swing with no wheat samples yet and early lines expected next week. Oats prices slide due to old oats on market with quotes around 2s 1d to 2s 2d for good coloured feed, Canadiana and Danish scarce and varying quality. Oatsheaf Chaff prime old on market with no new chaff cut except mixing purposes. prime heavy lines offered at 8s when ready.
Wheat offers in small lots describe quality above expectations with the price settled around 45 8d. Large sale of 1200 hinds of Tuscan at 4s 6d. Oats demand softens as forward delivery offers restrain sales. Duns 4000 bushels at 2s 8d and Gartons 2800 at 2s 3d. Barley malting 6d to 6d per bushel. Cockstoot scarce. seed samples offered at 5d and refused. no new chaff business yet.
The second of four wool sales held in the agricultural buildings drew 17 696 bales with seven selling houses. Buyers stayed keen for good wools as bright lustrous types gained 4d to 1d per lb, while inferior wools weakened slightly and demand for coarser lots remained limited. Local mills bought the fine wools, Bradford reps took coarser bright lots.
London wool sales were postponed by fog. Dalgety and Co. reported a cable stating slightly better demand for frozen meat but unchanged prices except for certain lamb products. New Zealand frozen lamb quoted at 63 per lb. No wool sales were held today due to thick fog.
