In Ashburton the concert by Madame Lomen and Herr Benno Scherck drew a small crowd yet offered high artistic value. The matchless performance earned admiration for those on stage while locals lamented the weak turnout on New Year’s Eve.
Hews reports received that Mr William Hood's brother died suddenly in a ballroom in Mount Somers around New Year. Hood, a longtime draughts enthusiast, once met the Scottish grandmaster known as Herd Laddie during a New Zealand visit. An inquest was to be held that day. Also noted are brief obituaries from Brussels and Aris about M de Trooz and M Guyot-Dessaigne.
The Ashburton Pipe Band completed a week's visit to Nelson amid holiday sports crowds. A local band demonstration accompanied a sports meeting in their honor, with many visitors attending and the pipers due to sail to Lyttelton this afternoon. Farquhar Young, who had a minor accident recently, joins the party.
A party returning from Ashburton races in Glenie's conveyance ran away near Tinwald station after frightening horses. Mrs Crisp fell heavily and was found semi conscious, later judged seriously injured. The runaway hit Mr Joshua Lewis’s conveyance. one wheel broke, then the wheel collapsed. Mrs Crisp was treated in Ashburton. Mr Crisp suffered slight concussion but was no longer in danger.
On Tuesday evening January 7 Allan Hamiltons new dramatic company visits Ashburton to present Robert Ganthony s A Message from Mars on an elaborate scale. The cast includes Robert Inman Geo E B Bryant Harold Carr E B M Beresford and others with Khadijah Cooper Fanny Beris Hilda Fraser Beatrice Usher Barley Watson and more. Special scenery by Alfred Clint Harry Whaite and assistants and produced under Geo B E Bryant s direction. Box plan opens tomorrow morning at the Dresden on Bur nett street.
United Press reports Albert Thompson, an English mechanic, was arrested on suspicion of murdering a young woman on Christmas night and placing the body in a lamp in Harrison New Jersey. The husband and family details are unclear as officials assess the accusation.

Primitive Methodist Sunday school pupils and friends visited Digby’s Bridge for their annual outing with ample refreshments and games. Wakanki Lodge of Good Yomi held picnics in Mr Hunt’s paddock drawing over 100 members and friends from Ashburton and Winslow for races games and tilting at the line. The Shief Templar thanked Mr Hunt for lending the paddock and the Baptist Young People’s Society enjoyed a paddock picnic with gates and other gaiety.
