An extract from Alfred Chichele Plowell’s Grain or Chaff argues drink as the foremost evil among vices. It cites Marylebone records of 21 798 cases and about 5 301 drunk cases in a year, with a £179 499 817 drink bill for the population.
In an Ambleside address Captain Rigg urged churches to combat gambling and drunkenness, arguing abstinence from liquor as essential to national prosperity. He cited Cobden and Lincoln, urged communion wine reform, and praised the Salvation Army for teetotal stand while calling for church unity.

Wheat seconds run 3s 3d to 3s 5d, oats stronger with several lots sold at 2s 1d, barley prime making grain quoted 4s 6d to 4s 9d. Potatoes slow despite ample enquiry for shipment.
From Our Own Correspondent Christchurch February 14 buyers hold firm on prices while sellers resist reductions. Wheat sales 4s 2d to 4s 2 1d, some 4s dd bids. Oats scarce as growers seek 2s 2d for good feed. Barley weaker and buyers cut back. Cocksfoot up to 6d per lb direct to North Island. Peas weak due to London market. New potatoes offered at £5 10s and onions £5 10s to £5 per bag at stations.
In Dunedin on February 14 the Arbitration Court heard that an agreement has been reached on the engineers dispute. The award will follow the Auckland line with one class of engineers and a minimum rate of 1s 4d per hour. The chairman of the Conciliation Board will handle disputed matters, and Millers Empire sales named R Rusbridge and G B Whiting as union representatives on Canterbury Conciliation Board.
The London wheat market is weak and active with heavy American and River Plate shipments depressing demand. Cargoes of old Australian wheat afloat price quotes range from 383 to 39s per quarter, with steamer parcels around 87s, New Zealand bids 38s to 40s long term, and American berry supply listed at 63,880,000 quarters. Moor prices fall on ample supply. butter remains firm. Danish prices rise by ten kroner. wool stays quiet with few trades and varied prices.
Mr Bolam the New Zealand Insurance Company manager told the Roslyn Fire Brigade social that rates were cut as low as possible but with added costs from an Act of Parliament to support brigades and widespread Dominion losses, rates must rise.
A Christchurch pamphlet from Henry Hughes promotes easy draught inducing smoke consumer inventions. It claims simple flue arrangements will render such devices satisfactory and marketable. The firm at 183 Hereford Street invites inventors to consult and gives on the spot advice and instruction in Canterbury.
James Briggs of Wellington reports in September 1907 that Rheumo relieved and cured his rheumatism after trying many remedies. He praises the product and urges others with rheumatics or gout to try it, noting its availability in chemists at 2s 6d and 4s 6d. Also advertised are stylish shoes from Stock's Blue Boot Shop for businessgoing young ladies.
Wellington February 14 The appeal of Constable Parner against a magistrate's conviction and fine for assaulting Patterson was heard before Mr Justice Cooper. The judge held that arresting without a warrant was unjustified and the appeal was dismissed without costs as Patterson provoked the incident.
In Auckland on February 18 the Indralems from New York arrived with cargo papers that were not properly routed. Papers posted in New York instructed fastest mail, but many papers remain undelivered or misdirected, leaving Auckland and southern ports without clear cargo details.
At a Wellington meeting, the By-laws Committee urged continuing the Fire Board but the Mayor opposed loss of local control. The motion failed 12 to 9. The Mayor led a move to ask the Governor-in-Council to terminate the Wellington fire district.
