The remarkable career of Madame Rachel the Enameller
Scrutinizes the life of Sarah Russell later known as Madame Rachel, an 1800s London enchanter and cosmetics vendor whose scheme lured Mrs Borradaile and others. Her practice sold costly “Arabian Bath” formulas while counterfeit claims of royal connections and beauty powers fed a rising fraud cycle. She faced trials at Old Bailey in 1868 and 1878, receiving five years’ penal servitude each time, and died in Woking Prison in 1880 after a career marked by warning to credulous ladies.
