Wellington December 10. Education Minister G Fowlds states boards oppose free school books and that funds were carefully apportioned after surveying primary and standards I and II books. He rejects claims drawing books and writing blocks justify reduced funding and says extra help possible if costs exceed capitation.
Dunedin December 10. The Education Board received from Mr Goyen a report on the circular and memorandum from the Education Department about free distribution of school books. He notes the grant may cover readers and arithmetics for early standards but not enough for slates, exercise books, drawing materials, and pencils. He suggests readers are costly to replace if kept at home. The board should seek Department interpretation or funds for alternatives and forwarded the report to the Minister and other districts.
Henderson and Pollard admitted failing to provide workers a reasonable opportunity to vote in the November 17 general election. The court noted this was the first case of its kind and stressed workers must have time to vote. A fine of 20s plus costs was imposed.
Mrs S A Clare of 23 Phillip Street Alexandria Sydney credits Bile Beans with curing years of splitting headaches and wind on the stomach after trying many remedies. She reports rapid improvement after one box and declares herself a new woman worthy of recommending the product. The Arbitration Court in Christchurch December S1 orders the Timari hotel proprietors joined as parties to the hotel and restaurant employees award. It rules that private hotels and boarding houses owners should not be included in the award.
The market shows further hardening due to supply shortages with millers replenishing stocks and a rise of 1d per bushel. Tuscan and Pearl reach 4s 3d to 4s 24d, Hunters around 4s 2d on trucks, with f.a.g. Tuscan 1200 sacks sold. Oats trade slow, heavy milling oats in demand, light Duns neglected, oats prices softened below seller quotes.
From Our Own Correspondent Christchurch December 11 reports solid demand for wheat, driven by North Island buyers and a preferred Tuscan variety. Sales indicate firmer prices. stock figures include 1100 and 650 bushels of Tuscan and 1500 Tuscan 800 Pearl at 4s 24d, and 600 Tuscan at 4s 2d, all at country stations. No new grass or produce lines noted.
Dunedin market shows scarce prime milling wheat and firm quotes for fowl wheat and broken grades. Oats demand quiet with limited line sales. prices for prime milling and feed oats listed. In Wellington, December 11 the War Office tender forms for preserved meat to Woolwich Dockyard are received. Dalgety and Co report tender notes on frozen meat markets with mixed shifts in mutton lamb beef prices.
Timaru reports a foreman Mr D Puttick and gang returning from Broken River with meagre wages. From Oct 1 to Nov 25 he earned £6 10s 6d for 197 hours, deducting £2 for food, leaving £4 10s 6d for five weeks. Other gang members’ pay varied from £1 18s 3d to £7 5s 3d, with complaints of underpayment and equal rates for good and bad work. Living conditions were hard in tents with high costs for firewood and coal. equipment costs and possessions could not be recovered when leaving.
