Por Para Association reports John Graham aged about 60 collapsed and died while working at the Petane collier field in Lyttelton near noon. He had long port ties and heart disease treatment records. The incident follows a busy port community routine with prior health issues.
At Blenheim on December 9 a shop owned by Levin and Co. and run by cycle dealer E H Best was gutted by fire. Only a motor bicycle survived. several sportsmen's stag heads were lost. Best faced heavy losses with £100 stock. the Sunlding insured for £400. In Dunedin on the same day Bell Brothers’ bicycle shop at Balclutha was destroyed with stock and fittings insured for £300.
The agreement on the boilermakers' dispute was shvnied at Edinburgh by the conference and now awaits a men’s ballot. A Cunard steamer contract was awarded to John Brown and Co. at Clydebank. The Norwich St John the Baptist church opened. the Duke of Norfolk funded £250,000.
Four hundred ninety two cholera cases and 148 deaths are reported at Madeira. Officials announce that absolute freedom of all religions will be decreed at month end.

Christchurch December 9 At a meeting of the Automobile Association reference was made to a recent fatality at Woodlands crossing. A motion was carried requesting the committee to contact the Railway Department to see if electric alarms could be placed at crossings as in other countries. Drivers also cited a dangerous Styx crossing with limited train visibility.
A Sydney woman Aliss Dufaur with Peters and Alexander Graham made the first female ascent of Mount Cook on December 3. They started at 2 50 am from bivouac above Hooker Glacier and reached the main summit via Earle’s route at 8 40 am. The party spent two hours on the summit and returned to the Hermitage the next day completing the ascent in five hours fifty minutes from the bivouac, beating prior records by an hour.
In Wellington on November 8 the Hannah Nadine litigation ends as Justice Cooper approves a settlement. Nadine pays Hannah 125 pounds, secures 105 pounds for a forefee action, and both release each other from all rent or damages claims. Nadine is discharged from imprisonment and released immediately after two months in custody.
Mrs Eddy was buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery near Boston. She was ninety but appeared sixty, with few mourners present besides relatives. A guard stood at the tomb door. James Radley flew a Bleriot monoplane from Castroville California to Del Monte in twelve minutes covering sixteen miles.
A horse bolted a buggy derailing the Richmond tram. Three people were injured. the buggy smashed and the horse killed. In other news Queensland University of Chemistry appointed staff including Dr Steele and Professors Priestly and Gibson. Warships Challenger and Prometheus re commissioned. Water Commission officer Anderson suspended. A man found dead on Princes Bridge steps with wallet and ticket.
Capetown hosts a farewell dinner for Lord and Lady Gladstone and Lord De Villiers. Lord Gladstone praises the visitors and the union of South Africa. Mr Fisher or Wisher signals Australia and New Zealand interest in South Africa’s national questions. General Hertzog, standing for General Botha, renews the call for race unification and honors England.
The Treasurer introduced an amendment reducing land tax to a half penny and offering a 250 pound round exemption. He said the government sought only enough revenue to keep the ledger balanced. The £50,000 revenue loss from the cut and exemptions from £500 were approved.
