Boxer movement seen as anti foreign revolt in China
The Rev A Sowerby reports from London on Boxer tactics and official complicity in Pao-ting-fu. He notes the movement began after Shantung officials and Empress Dowager support, targets Catholics in Chih li and Shantung Ta, and risks to foreign铁路 and missions. Li Hung Chang calls Boxers a rabble led by fanatic anti Christian sentiment.

Paid to Die in China Substitution for Execution
A Chinese report claims murderers were spared by paying substitutes to die in their stead. One killer paid £200 for an opium addict to be decapitated, another £120 for a consumptive man to be strangled, and a third £100 for life imprisonment. In all, 218 men offered to substitute for their death to aid their families under a legal practice permitting such substitutions.
