Rakaia Stock Sale Shows Strong Bidding at Yards

The usual monthly sale at Rakaia yarded 1748 head including 1160 hoggets 463 ewes and 120 wethers. Prices ranged for sheep from 9s 8d to 15s and ewes from 8s 4d to 20s and wethers 16s 6d. Cattle five head yarded with cows at 5s and 3d. Pigs four yarded two at 10s and two at 12s 6d.

South Arkai a Road Board Meets with Tenders Approved

The South Arkai a Road Board held its usual monthly meeting with five tenders opened and accepted for gorse cutting, shingling, and five lots. A deputation asked to rent land near the plantation. the petition was referred to the Domain Board. Other issues included road works, fence trimming, gorse clearance, and a post office inquiry. Accounts totaling £162 5s 1d were passed for payment.

Farmers' Union protests on land policy in Auckland

The Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union adopts a unanimous resolution opposing withholding freehold from tenants under the Land for Settlements Act. It urges extending purchase rights at original value with 2 1 2 per cent extra to all Crown tenants and objects to nine million acres being set aside as national endowments unless they are purely pastoral runs requiring minimal capital to produce.

Amendments Proposed to Accountants Bill at Colony Meeting

At a largely attended accountants meeting suggestions were made for amendments to the Accountants Bill. Proposals include lowering the registration age to 35, extending eligibility to all members of Accountants' Associations across the colony and empire, appointing half the council from practical accountants and half from commercial accountants, and forming a council of eight members from each Centre and from the rest of the colony.

City Solicitor Finds Private Letter Boxes Ultra Vires

Avonland August 2. City Solicitor Cotter advised the Council that framing a by law to compel residents to provide letter boxes at private homes would be ultra vires. If needed, such provisions should come from the General Assembly, not individual municipalities. The Council will send a copy of the opinion to the Chief Postmaster.

Tree transit of fodder Iron Southland aids relief for famished stock in the north. Stock agents report large orders with 1700 tons of swedes sent to Oamaru and about 800 tons more. Railways are asked to run twelve trucks daily for free transport, with over 1000 tons expected in three weeks. The season shows higher sacks moved to stores: 893,212 this year versus 287,489 last year, a gain of 105,780, and 4,062 sacks raised last week compared with 10,517 in 1906.
