Col William A Morrell a long time Elizabeth resident and wealthy businessman died suddenly Wednesday after an illness of under a week. Born Philadelphia May 15 1821 he moved to Elizabeth in 1857 to enter the coal trade and built a fortune. He served as lieutenant colonel of the Third New Jersey regiment and later commanded it. He also held posts as station master at Asbury Park and superintendent of Monmouth Park race track and was active in Odd Fellows and Knights Templar fraternal groups.

Narrow Escape as 6 Ton Safe Breaks Bridge at Elberon
A six ton safe en route from New York to Ocean Grove National Bank crashed through a wagon bridge over the railroad at Elberon on Monday night. The safe rested on a truck drawn by four horses and toppled onto the tracks but was supported by cross beams. After twelve hours the team from the Safe Company, led by George Schechtel, rigged a windlass and jacks to lift the safe back onto the truck without injury to men or horses or further track damage.
