Harris denied clemency in Mary Potts murder case
Governor Flower rejected the clemency application of Carlyle W. Harris who was convicted of murdering his wife Mary Helen Potts by morphine poisoning. With no respite, Harris faces possible execution next week. The case drew wide interest after an Albany Appeal Court denial and a Recorder Smyth resentencing. A referee gathered testimony, including Dr. H. B. Kinmonth who claimed to have sold morphine to Potts. The referee submitted all testimony after last week’s hearings.

Fines Remitted and Bicycle Ordinance Debate at Borough Meeting
At the Monday meeting of the Mayor and Council about fifty nine attendees, mainly wheelmen, sought amendments to the sidewalk bicycle ordinance. Council directed the Borough counsel to draft a modified ordinance. Other actions included tax and appropriations resolutions, a crematory opposition, street improvements on Asbury avenue, and a topographical map by Parker & Black for 45 dollars. The Fire Department report, police staffing, and sewer connection requests were discussed, with several ordinances introduced including firearms, toy pistols, and refuse disposal. A plan to invite a national editorial association to Asbury Park was noted, and music on the beach was proposed with talks for Gilmore’s band. The meeting ended with bills passed and adjournment.

Bluefish Catch Big Weekend for Detre Party at Nag's Head
Mr Detre of Philadelphia and friends fished at Nag's Head on Friday April 28 landing sixty four bluefish weighing five to nine pounds each in about two hours. They shared the catch with locals including the minister and loaded fish to a wagon then sailed to Manteo. Fishermen warned others, a net spooked the school, and some fish were lost. Locals said the weather had been too cold for the season. A freight car derailment near Lewis's lumber sheds damaged sidewalk and road but caused no injuries. Avon gets a new nickname The Hole of the Coast per the second page article.

Freeholders Meet on Bridges and Road Writs
A special meeting of the Board of Chosen Freeholders in Freehold discussed bids for future bridges and two writs of mandamus to compel building Ocean and Eatontown township stone roads. The board reviewed bridge costs by township totaling 79,509, with 20,244 less than last year, and approved furnishing clerk offices with new shelves and files.
