At a chilly council meeting seven pages of debate focus on the Sea Rest charity tax. The tax was canceled for 1898 and 1899 after citing the Paterson case supporting exemption. Officials discuss city benefits and potential room licenses amid concerns over beneficiary details.
The Republican convention to nominate four New Jersey at large delegates will be held on April 19. Monmouth county Republicans vote April 11 for district delegates. two will go to the national convention from the Third district. Oliver H. Brown of Spring Lake is urged to run for district delegate.
The Court of Chancery in Newark continued the Potts versus Hubbard case. Potts claimed a partnership in the Asbury Park and Belmar Street Railroad and service terms dating to 1805 when both served as directors. The court ruled for Hubbard and dismissed Potts bill. Stout attorneys represented Potts. Patterson represented Hubbard.
A Washington dispatch says the comptroller of the currency approved forming a new bank at Ocean Grove with capital of 20000 dollars. The Ocean Grove National Bank will include incorporators William H. Beegle D. D. Covert of Ocean Grove S. W. Kirkbride George F. Kroebl and A. C. Twining of Asbury Park.
The Republican primaries selected nominees for city offices including city clerk W C Burrough, city treasurer Milan Ross, tax collector John Hubbard, and board of education members Randolph Rosas J F Ackerman R A Tusting. Ward wins included Hiram Walton for Common Council and James E Canse Edward E Hammell for constables. Other posts filled included assessor J E Wortman and freeholder chosen, with Kirkbride and Harry J Rockafeller renominated in the second ward.
Miss Elsie Brown told Common Council she faces persecution by Fred C. Breautigam who refused to lower a fence, darkening her first floor rooms and harming rental value. Magistrate Cross noted abusive language, and with no witness, suggested legal options are limited. The Board of Health and Street Committee will investigate.
William Bullock, a Black man, faces a third trial for the murder of Constable James Walsh of Red Bank after he shot at Walsh during an arrest attempt. The May term will likely begin on a Monday, with Attorney General Samuel H. Grey of Camden and Prosecutor John E. Foster of Atlantic Highlands prosecuting. Edmund Wilson is instructed to assist the state in the case.
Chief Smith announces a police crusade against cyclists riding at night without lights to enforce a rising traffic ordinance. George Julian Thomas of West Park paid a $2 fine Tuesday night and has his wheel held as security until payment.
Deal borough council held Friday night ceremonies as Mayor William Hathaway was sworn in and named Harry B. Wilson council president and P. B. Bartholomew collector. Counselor Samuel A. Patterson was reappointed borough counsel. Hathaway, a pioneer resident, once owned most land now occupied by the borough.
A citizens primary is set in Park Hall at 7.80 on Saturday evening to name candidates for the First ward. Joseph Lucent Cliver is a candidate for freeholder in the First ward and is expected to gain endorsement from the primary voters.
Rev. Dr. George B. Wight former pastor of the First M E Church departed the city on Wednesday to take permanent residence in Camden where he now serves as pastor of the Union M E Church.
Nearly 150 Masons gathered at Deal Country Club for Asbury Lodge No. 142 F and A M to toast 25 years. Dignitaries from New Jersey and New York attended as speeches honored the lodge’s history, officers, and sorely missed founders.
Thirty seven shooters contested a five bird sweep at Oceanport. First prize was a 400 pound hog valued at 40, second prize a 600 pound hog valued at 30. At the end six tied for first with clean scores and fifteen for second with one miss. Tied for first were A L Ivins Red Bank Jake Applegate South Amboy and J L Price Pleasure Bay. Arthur Soseman and James Murray among those tied for second. The event will be hot off on next Saturday afternoon.
Reverend Dr. Peter Stryker of Grand Avenue Reformed Church died of heart failure shortly after a sermon on January 14. Born April 8, 1826, he preached with vigor into old age and attributed his health to abstinence, temper control, diet, and music. He was a close friend of the late Vice President Garret A. Hobart.
The obituary outlines Dr. Stryker's marriages and children, listing Margaret Conner, Henry Cadmus Stryker, Appa K. Stryker, Elisabeth Dubois, and Henry B. Stryker. A writ of error was filed to Supreme Court for review with Thomas J. Winckler as security at $1000. Lowell Relchi and George Calvary received two months for illegal liquor sales in Neptune township. other charges were suspended. Ball set at $1000 in each case.
The Asbury Park High School Athletic Association prepares a May field day at the athletic grounds. The event, expected to draw contestants from other schools, will feature foot races baseball and sack races. Admission will be free and organizers hope it becomes a banner occasion in the association’s history.

The Manasquan Gravel Company elected officers Wednesday at Samuel A Patterson's office. Judge Wilbur A Heisley was named president with S A Patterson as secretary and treasurer. George Potts sold his Allenwood plant to Manasquan and took an interest in the company.
The Patten line will resume daily navigation between Pleasure Bay and New York starting Monday April 2. Boats depart New York foot of West Thirteenth Street at 9 a.m. and from the Battery at 8.50 a.m. Pleasure Bay departures are at 8.10 p.m.

E. A. Ford traveling passenger agent for the Pennsylvania Railroad died suddenly of heart disease at his Ocean Grove home age 62. He dropped as he dressed, survived by a widow and one son, long valued by travelers and a champion for Asbury Park train service. Funeral held Thursday with pallbearers from New York. remains to be sent to Bordentown for interment.
The case of Asbury Park versus Russell Horner, brought by Helen Woolf to require bond for child support, was halted by Justice Borden before trial. City Solicitor Hawkins objected to several jurors, prompting the discontinuance while witnesses and parties were present.
The Beaide of Registry and Election will meet on Tuesday April 3 from 1 to 6 p m to revise the voting list. The First ward board meets at the southeast corner of Bond street and Bangs avenue and the Second ward board at Educational Hall.
