The Gonmon Council adopted a Bradley resolution favoring Sunday trains stopping at North Asbury station to serve Asbury Park’s hotels and cottage owners, despite opposition arguing it would hurt Sabbath observance and local values. The debate featured supporters claiming progress and access, and opponents warning of property decline and moral concerns.
Common Council members clash over executive sessions with Founder Bradley defending secrecy. Plans to buy gravel below $10 a car from Manasquan Gravel Co. are discussed but no action. The Oreos Athletic Club held a 10 mile city course road race on Memorial Day with many spectators. Notable results include Walter Rushton scratch 28 minutes and various handicap times. James Woodward and Alvin Cliver were in the race but injured and did not finish.
A storm wrecked H B Rider’s New York cottage at Gallies Long Branch. Built value 15000 dollars. It toppled last winter and was rescued. Monday high seas undermined it again. Bulkheads at two Mies Edith Storm cottages at Monmouth Beach washed away. both endangered. Seabright and Long Branch saw slight damage. United States bulkhead slightly damaged. Seabright railroad tracks underwater delayed trains.
Civil War veterans and local posts marked Memorial Day with grave decorations at Mt Prospect, Hamilton, and other cemeteries. An address by Rev. William T. Abbott followed by tributes to fallen comrades. Colored veterans from Andrew Callioux Post also participated with services at Pine Brook Estontown and Macedonia cemeteries. Byron Rhome led prayers and Claude V. Guerin spoke at Mt Prospect.
Atlantic Coast Electric Light Company sues the borough of Allenhurst in chancery to stop removal of its wires from poles. The case notes prior consent to extend service with a permanent right, the boroughs plans to own poles, and affidavits from property owners supporting continued service. The vice chancellor will hear arguments in Jeremy City on Monday June 4.
John C Johnson, noted jeweler, died Monday at his home at the corner of Bond Street and Cookman Avenue after paralysis struck him last Tuesday. He was eighty two, survived by a widow, son Harvey B Johnson, and two daughters Pearl Johnson and Mrs William H Beegle. He had been active in Hightstown before moving to Ashbury Park. Funeral services were held at his residence on Wednesday at 1:80 o'clock.
A large crowd gathered under clear skies for a National Cycling Association event at the athletic grounds. Fred J. Titus defeated Lin Leferson in two events, with notable tandem races featuring Joe Harrison and Harvey Wilson against Harry Rushton and Lewis Bennett. Jefferson won the mile scratch, while Titus claimed the other two races, and Moors of the Oreos Athletic Club contributed strong showings despite some mishaps.
A large party of prominent New York figures attended the Deal Golf Club handicap on the Deal links Memorial Day. Among them were Colonel George B. M Harvey Richard Croker Jr Lewis Ralston C H Murphy Alexander Hudout W H Osborne Edward McCall Bryan Kennely and E E Cittel of New York and George F Coxe and F Conklin of Newark. Hudout Murphy Cittell and Twining qualified. Twining won the match.
The Dutch Reformed Church Arcot Mission in India mourns Rev Dr John Scudder who died May 28 at Kodal Kanal aged 64. He served thirty nine years with Arcot and became an authority on India and its people. His wife son Rev Henry J Scudder and daughter Dr Ida Scudder remain in India. He was one of seven missionary brothers. Mrs Bruce B Keator of this city is his niece.
An automobile company asked the Common Council on Monday for permission to establish a vehicle route in the city. The firm pledges to pay two percent of net receipts for the privilege. The application was referred to the Street Committee of Wataga for action.
The Common Council chose three bands for the 1900 beach concerts Lamblase Sanford and Vincenza leading bidders. Lamblase won a reconsideration but Vincentz was later engaged with thirteen men six weeks and sixteen eight weeks at four thousand one hundred eighty dollars. Concerts to begin Saturday June 16.
Charles Sexton was fined five dollars and costs by Magistrate Dodd for obstructing traffic by tottering with beer. While Sexton was jailed his son, Charles Williams, known as Fatty, tried to smuggle a bottle of beer into the cell but was foiled by Policeman Steelman who recovered the bottle hidden in a coat. Williams was held on fifty dollars bail for the attempted sly trick.
Robert Holbrook of Car gian Holbrook Ocean Grove contractors died this morning at 7 16 while trimming the lawn in front of his home at 32 Olin Street Ocean Grove He was married twice and survived by one son aged about five He belonged to Neptune Lodge No 64 IC C F Coast City Council No 818 Royal Arcanum Senelde Conclave No 281 Improved Order of Heptasophe K Hall Post No 41 GA R Funeral arrangements not fully stated
