Vast Matawan Fire Ravages Business District Early Sunday
A major blaze in Matawan destroyed half a dozen buildings in the business section, causing about $100,000 in losses. Fire crews from Matawan and Keyport fought the flames as new fires started behind Shepherd's grocery and near residences on Broad and Main streets. Residents armed themselves for protection, with Insurance losses concentrated in Edward I. Brown's three properties and the Opera House portion owned by F. P. Right Rev. James A. McFaul, bishop of the diocese, preached at the Church of the Holy Spirit yesterday. He led the eight o clock mass and gave a sermon on Faith. The annual report showed receipts of $7,000 for the year. Over $1,700 was raised by the vaudeville performance in the old opera house last summer. Six hundred dollars came from the fall in Educational Hall two months ago.
