London reports a grave shift in the Boer war front with British efforts at Ladysmith beleaguered. Dispatches detail renewed Boer offensives, Buller’s limited action, hospital strain, and heavy shelling as British forces try to hold Colenso and nearby positions amid mounting casualties.
Field Cornet Viaser reports Kuruman Bechuanaland was bombarded yesterday morning by British forces. The garrison surrendered at 6 pm after losing arms and fortifications. One hundred twenty prisoners were taken including Captain Bates and Captain Dennison, plus the magistrate Mr. Hilliard and eight officers. Seventy natives were captured along with rifles revolvers and ammunition. Fifteen British soldiers were wounded and cared for by Dr. Bearne. Looted horses oxen meal flour sent to Pretoria via Vryburg.
John Winans an long time resident of Asbury Park died early this morning at the Orange Grand and Munroe avenues of pneumonia contracted twelve days prior. He was 62 and leaves Widow Mrs Josephine M Winans and five children John Herbert Winans Carlton Winans William Winans Josephine Virginia and Faunie Winans. Formerly a grocer and wholesale salt dealer at Main and Somerville avenues and 406 Main street The Winans Company, of which he was president and treasurer, he also owned real estate here and in Yonkers. Funeral services will be held at Memorial Church Wednesday after 1 are. The remains will be interred at Woodlawn cemetery New York. Funeral Director Burtis in charge.
Alvilda Aker of West Mattison avenue was arrested Saturday night by Constable Hubbert for keeping a disorderly house. Indicted by the grand jury, she had an arrest warrant and was taken to Freehold.

Mrs Serena L Allison widow of the late William L Allison died this morning of paralysis at her daughter Mrs Ezekiel Allens home in Allenhurst. She was 77 years old and leaves four children Mrs Ezekiel Allen Mrs Peter Casler William L Allison and Mrs Charles Griffiths. The funeral will be held at 1 30 PM Thursday from Mrs Allens residence with Undertaker Sexton in charge. Interment at Mt Prospect cemetery.
John H. Jackson a pioneer of Asbury Park died at his Prospect Avenue home in West Park at age 70. A former constable and longtime grocer, he leaves a widow and seven children. He belonged to the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 1 30 PM with interment at Hamilton. Sexton Ig is in charge.
