Council debates opening spring music season and grading two streets under contract fire ordinance held over a week. Officials discuss bids for music, city water charges, street improvements, guttering, and fire hydrant work amid mild budget constraints and February weather.
The Wenley steamer received repairs costing 140 dollars 85 cents from La France Engine Co. The work included new cogs driving rods and heads in the pump and renickeling worn parts. Council adjourned then into executive session to discuss a percent item of business.
Volunteers urge passage of the King bill to reimburse losses and hardships from service in the late war. They note 53 cents daily from the national government barely covered uniforms and rations, while state pay would aid families left in debt and unemployed, despite high costs charged to soldiers.
Philadelphia politician and amusement operator Thomas J. Ryan challenges high taxes on his Asbury Park property. His lots on Ocean avenue east of Devonport Inn and the adjacent Biograph and Electrical Casino building are assessed at 6000 and 8500 dollars. He seeks a rebate and may seek action before the late Board of Taxation if rebated is denied. The issue is referred to the Finance Committee for consideration.
Plans for the burlesque following the ladies' minstrels are completed. The show is set for March 14 at Park Opera House with A. W. Dey as manager Howard Hullek as secretary and Howard D. LeRoy as treasurer E C Burtla to be a dramatic director. End men suggested include Freeholder McCabe and Sea Baron Halsey Wilcox.
J Lindany Black artificer of Company A devotes long hours to photography in camp. He develops negatives and prints pictures for himself and other soldiers who buy cameras through him. The Athens trip and other locations yield a notable portrait collection of Uncle Sam’s men.
Randers of the Journan notes the Asbury Park Printing House established in 1878 offers printing services for all kinds of work. It boasts state best equipment and wide styles with lower winter rates but steady quality and welcoming out of town business.
A Central freight train struck a wagon at Springwood avenue injuring Byron VanBenschoten, killing the horse and wrecking the wagon. VanBenschoten, 45, then went to his home as doctors treated his broken arm, fractured ankle, and scalp wound. he is expected to recover but with a long stay. The engineer was Charles Ross and conductor Frank Wilson. A separate Sunday wreck near Corlies avenue caused temporary track closures and heavy damage but was cleared by a wrecking crew.
A cordial welcome awaits visitors from Asbury Park and Ocean Grove at the Marshall House in Savannah. Mr and Mrs J Boyce have leased the hotel, bringing long hotel management experience. Central location, fine accommodations and table, reasonable charges, and opportunities for northern tourists to find a convenient spring stopping place.
Atlantic City Common Council member Jos E Lingerman visited Asbury Park on business and was granted floor access to occupy Senator Bradley's chair. He attended the executive session and thanked the council, meeting members present. Slogerman is executor of Anna M Beckett estate with Ocean Grove real estate sold recently.
Harry Casner was discharged from service on December 16 for age under wartime limits. He served with Company A at Sea Girt Fort Hancock Pompton and Athens and was released after his mother and Congressman Howell intervened.
Mesara, Breluer & Son agree to use the mill whistle as a fire alert system. The code prescribes 1 long blast from the mill for general help, and a sequence of long whistles to indicate fires at Bradley Beach Briggey Park Ocean Grove West Grove Asbury Park with specific numbers of blasts for each location.
Dr J F Davison urges continued publicity for Asbury Park to attract visitors and revenue. He proposes funding a $5000 yearly advertising program via general taxation to avoid subscription shortfalls and notes tax support would spur year round growth and prevent stagnation.
Asbury Park officials discuss strengthening crossings after a severe storm. Councilman Harvey says Railroad Square is the worst area for waterlogged, impassable paths requiring raised walks or culverts. Suggestions include railroad cooperation, wooden or stone bridges, and bids for key crossings.

Asbury Park residents celebrate Washington's Birthday with a packed auditorium for Company A reception. Medals honor each member. speeches praise service at Sea Girt Fort Hancock Pompton and Georgis woods. Gen Patterson and local leaders attend. refreshments served.
A muddy parade was abandoned. veterans led to a banquet at the Dairy Kitchen hosted by citizens. President Kirkbride and councilmen attended. Majors, lieutenants, and Army and Navy members were thanked by Rev. W T Abbott and Mayor Teebroeck. Medals were presented by Samuel A. Patterson.
Patterson Taylor & Co will launch Innew-Orm part of Schwager building at 022 Cookman Arreous in mid March. G W Patterson and James R Taylor, formerly with Bielebach Company store, lead the new firm with ample capital. They plan high class clothing and furnishings with custom work and exclusive lines secured by Taylor in Philadelphia. The store design will be stylish and modern, inside and out.
Ruth produced under the direction of Dred Bryan on March 7, a large scale musical work written by the author of Belshazzar. It features 170 pages of music and complex scenery imported from New York for the Ocean Grove assembly hall. About 80 costumes are being prepared from a low assortment as prices range from 50 cents to a dollar.
Mayor E P Benjamin heads the Allenhurst Company and selects W D Rockefeller and J T Lannion as managers for the season. Rockefeller brings two years of hotel experience and Lannion, a practical manager, will arrive in four months to oversee improvements. The Inn is being rebuilt with a modern front, expanded lobby and 65 new rooms plus a large oceanfront pool 160 by 50 feet due for completion by June 1.
A small blaze on Main Street near the Howland Block was reported yesterday at 11 am. Firefighters saved the structure owned by Mrs. Sarah Rogers using ample water, limiting damage mostly to the lower restaurant level. Estimated loss around $200.
