Porto Rico Tariff Debate Splits Republicans and Democrats

Washington February 22. The Porto Rican tariff debate sees Republican opposition from Mr. Bromwell of Ohio who favors voting for the bill if the substitute fails. Others like Mr. Ray of New York and Mr. Long of Kansas back the measure while Mr. Henry of Texas opposes. Democrats show mixed support with Mr. Day of Louisiana as a leading advocate and Mr. Wilson a Silver Republican leaning toward supporting the bill. Debates will resume at 11 with sessions planned through Thursday. Conferees on the financial bill push toward reconciliation as Hawaiian government considerations linger.

The William R Ham liquor sale case was transferred from Freehold to the New Jersey Supreme Court in Trenton. The county court lacked power to amend the indictment which substituted Asbury Park for Neptune township. A November term reversal followed for faulty indictment and another hearing is set.

Triumph for Mrs. Crossett in circuit court judgment

Mrs Rosa A Crossett proprietor of the Lake sventio hotel won a contested case against Mrs Nancy I Pettingitt of Asbury Park. Pettingill sought to recover a balance on the sale of the Phoenix property on Cookman avenue. Crossett claimed she was told a sale for 6000 and sold for 7000. After new trial motions the case ended with Pettingill abandoning further action and satisfaction of judgment is filed.

Applegate Sues Atlantic Coast Railway Over Damages

James B. Applegate brings a suit in the Supreme court through Samuel A. Patterson against the Atlantic Coast Railway Company. He alleges a conductor forcibly ejected him from a car last November after paying fare to Allenhurst. He complied with the order but was later again ordered to leave the car.

Benton Harbor Michigan February 22 Allan Geisler fifty died after shooting his wife and then drowning himself in Lake Michigan Mrs Geisler was shot in the head and may recover Geisler and his wife had frequent quarrels and planned separation in a few weeks He leaves two former wives living.
